Languages is designed to enable all students in Australia to learn a language in addition to English – at NDSHS our Second language is Japanese. By studying Japanese, we recognise that students bring their own linguistic and cultural background to their learning, whether this is English or the target language or various combinations of languages. Though the study of Japanese, students will explore their own cultural understanding and experiences in order to appreciate and understand Japanese society and culture.
The study of another language is especially relevant today if our students
are
to meet the challenges of rapidly shrinking world frontiers and the
special needs for Australia’s multicultural society. Learning another language prepares students in meeting these challenges and gives them an
opportunity to develop language skills that will enhance their career
prospects. This is done through developing key competencies in contexts
that arise naturally from the respective contexts and investigative
bases of the subject.
