Chaplains provide spiritual and emotional support, Pastoral Care, and
creative connections for all students and staff irrespective of their
religious beliefs. They provide a service for people facing life
challenges, those who just need a listening ear, a caring presence, and a
message of hope. This includes providing support for staff and parents
in our school community.
The school chaplain’s roll supports the wider school community in a
range of ways, such as assisting students in exploring their
spirituality; providing guidance on values and ethical matters; helping
school counsellors and staff in offering welfare services and support in
cases of bereavement, family breakdown or other crisis and loss
situations.
Chaplains also run fun, positive activities for young people, both in
and out of school, and foster a supportive, caring school community.
This includes support for “at risk” students, support for staff and
families throughout the wider school community and spiritual support and
direction for all who may request it. These positive relationships help
young people and their families to face issues, by providing hope,
connection, meaning and purpose.
Chaplains in Queensland are employed by SU Qld, which
is an interdenominational Christian Organisation officially endorsed by
Education Queensland as an accredited employing authority for school
chaplains. Chaplains receive their remuneration through some government
funding (2 days per week) and through the generous financial donations
by individuals, businesses, local churches and the school P&C
committee.
