Aerospace stystems is a General ATAR subject which is offered at Years 11 and 12. An introductory program is
offered as an elective to students in Years 10.
The course provides students with a holistic understanding of the
aviation industry and prepares students for the various career
opportunities in the industry. The course has the support of Boeing and
Qantas who offer work experience opportunities for students but also the
support of major universities such as Queensland University of
Technology, University of Queensland and Central Queensland University
who offer direct entry into some Engineering programs if the student
achieves a high level of success.
It is a subject which can offer a gateway to career opportunities, a
contributor to an effective ATAR score or simply a new, fascinating and
challenging subject to study.
Course content
Upon successful completion of Aerospace Studies the students will understand
Basic
Aeronautical Knowledge and the major theory aspects of flying up to the
Recreational Aviation license standard. In addition, students will have
developed an understanding of engineering factors, physics, navigation,
airport design, safety management systems, business operations,
governing bodies and the history of aviation.
This subject contains elements of History, English, Mathematics,
Science, Physics, Engineering and Geography. All these elements
contribute to its interest and challenge.
Flight simulators
Throughout the course students have access to flight simulators for fixed and
rotary
wing aircraft, with some assessment tasks requiring competency in their
use. Students often have access to remote controlled aircraft for hands
on learning experiences. These hands on experiences allow students to
translate their theoretical knowledge into safe practice and gain a
deeper appreciation of flight.
Excursions
Every year students are given opportunities to participate in field trips to develop their understanding of the aviation industry first hand. Students are taken to pilot training facilities such as The Recreational Flying company and the engineering facilities at Gympie Airport, Students also attend the gliding club while at the facility. Students may attend other excursions to RAAF Amberley or Brisbane Airport Corporation. Aviation students are given access to many restricted areas not available the general public.
Careers
Many students who have successfully completed the aerospace course have
ended
up in aviation-related careers. Students have gone on to become pilots,
cabin crew, structural engineers, aeronautical engineers, air traffic
controllers, customs officials and fire fighting crew to name but a few.
Successful students in this course have a significant advantage over
other job applicants with their developed aerospace understanding and
industry recognition of the course.
