PUA21012 Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue)

Students will complete the Cert II Public Safety in Semester 1 and then focus on preparation for Cert 3 in fitness in semester 2. The aim of the Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue) - Bronze Medallion course is to develop skills and knowledge to perform the role of a patrolling lifesaver on the beach. Students will develop skills and knowledge to select appropriate equipment (tube, board, AED, radios) when responding to an aquatic rescue or during routine patrol duties. The aim of this Cert II Course is to provide students with the skills and knowledge of basic patrolling and surf awareness in order to be able to participate in lifesaving operations. This is the core award to be a surf lifesaver in Australia. The Bronze Medallion is the base award for all patrolling in Surf Life Saving. This is the award that allows you to Patrol on the beach, and also to be able to compete in Surf Sports Competitions from the age of 15 upwards.

Pre-requisites

Candidates must meet ALL of the following conditions:

  • be at least 15 years of age on the date of final assessment
  • complete a 400 metre swim in nine (9) minutes or less, unaided (goggles/mask permitted).

Assessment: A combination of continuous practical assessment and a written task (Multiple choice questions and assignment). ​

• Introduction to Fitness instruction involving gym work, circuit training and fitness theory•Fitness training and theory involving the gym, pool and biathlon event.
•​Surf Club and Surf patrol oreientation at Noosa Main Beach
Assessment: Continuous practical and Project assessment ​

Opportunities

  • Excursion to Noosa Heads main beach to participate in lifesaving activities   
  • Work as a volunteer surf lifesaver on the weekend and holidays
  • Compete in the annual Noosa District SHS Biathlon event (swim & Run)

Careers

After achieving the PUA21010 Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue), students may undertake a range of qualifications relevant to their role, such as:

  • PUA31310 Certificate III in Public Safety (Aquatic Search and Rescue)
  • PUA31404 Certificate III in Public Safety (Community Safety).

Certificate II in Public Safety (Aquatic Rescue) provides a pathway to work in many tourism and travel industry sectors and for a diverse range of employers. It can establish a basis for further education and employment in the fields of the Fitness industry, Allied health industries and Teaching and Multiple Tourism industries.

Health & Physical Education

Students learn to apply more specialised movement skills and complex movement strategies and concepts in different movement environments. They also explore movement concepts and strategies to evaluate and refine their own and others' movement performances. Students analyse how participation in physical activity and sport influence an individual's identities, and explore the role participation plays in shaping cultures. Students get to refine and consolidate personal and social skills in demonstrating leadership, teamwork and collaboration in a range of physical activities. This course is designed to prepare students for the selection of HPE senior subjects Physical Education, Health, Sport & Recreation and Cert III in Fitness

Careers

A course of study in Year 10 HPE can establish a basis for further education and employment in the fields of fitness, outdoor recreation and education, sports administration, community health and recreation and sport performance.
