School-based Apprenticeships and Traineeships

This program is an initiative of the New Apprenticeship Scheme which allows a student
to attend school on a flexible timetable as well as undertaking a paid traineeship/apprenticeship during the remainder of the school week and over school holidays.
School-based traineeships are usually only offered to students from Year 11 as they take two years to complete. The program delivers nationally endorsed competencies involving a contract of training and paid employment for the student. Students are required to undertake ‘off the job’ training with a training provider, possibly in school holiday times.

By the end of Year 12, students should have gained a level II or III certificate in their chosen field.

Be sure that you understand that apprenticeships and traineeships are legally binding formal agreements. When you sign these you are agreeing to particular work and training requirements, as is your host employer. Check all documents carefully with a parent or trusted adult to ensure that you fully understand what is required of you, the school and the employer in the agreement.

Traineeships/Apprenticeships
  • Undertake traineeship/apprenticeship one day a week and for part of holidays
  • Work a minimum of 380 paid hours in a 12 month period
  • Paid in accordance with award
  • Gain nationally recognised Certificate II or III accreditation
  • Reduces apprenticeship by up to 12 months
  • Combines on and off the job training
  • 18 months to 2 years duration
  • Gain credit towards a QCE at the same time
  • Students must fulfil certain school requirements before a school-based traineeship/apprenticeship is approved

Work Experience Placement

At Noosa District State High School we have our year 10 Work Experience Program that runs during VINCIT Week each year.  Work experience assists students in their transition from school to work and provides a formal arrangement whereby students, while enrolled in school participate in activities at a place work.  Work experience placement for students outside of the VINCIT program is arranged on an individual basis and is linked to a student’s career pathway.

From 1 January 2015, the Australian Government requires all students undertaking Vocational Education and Training (VET) to have a Unique Student Identifier (USI).

To create a USI

(Students must then make the USI available to their training provider before they can receive a statement of attainment or qualification.)
