Year 10 student, Max Hirst, testing various paper products
|
Year 10 students at Noosa District State High School have been performing “consumer tests” on a variety of paper products. As part of their Preparation for Multistrand Science” unit, the students investigated the qualities that made paper products (such as toilet paper, paper towel, and facial tissues) desirable from a consumer’s point of view.
Students need to devise their own testing methods, using both subjective (opinion-based) and objective (measurement based) means. Students recorded their results, performed statistical and graphical analyses, and then made recommendations regarding the more superior product.
Students have also investigated how cost, colour, texture and smell influenced the consumerism of some products. As some of the students are casually employed at the local supermarket, discussions then continued into the usefulness of this data in a real-world setting.
