What is Business?BCT

Business surrounds us every day. Business Education focuses on business and economic systems, information procedures, enterprise and ventures, and work environments.

The following is an excerpt from the Business Education Syllabus:
“Through Business Education, students develop an awareness of business within the home, school, local, national and global communities. They develop knowledge, practices and dispositions to critically analyse business situations, confidently meet their own and others’ needs and wants, capitalise on business opportunities, make informed decisions, and participate responsibly in business situations.”

Year 8 Business

All Year 8 students study one term of Business under the SOSE KLA. The following topics are studied to give students a sample of what is involved in studying Business in the future.

Year 9 & 10 Business

Students can choose to study Business for three semesters. Students gain a broad understanding of what occurs in business, how to record transactions and how to run a business. Computer technology is integrated throughout the course. Literacy and numeracy are emphasized as effective communication in business is vital. The following topics are studied:

Students can choose to specialize in computer technology for three semesters. Strands in ICT include:

Bullet Participating in Online Communities.

Accounting (Authority subject which counts towards an OP)

Accounting is a discipline which prepares students for further study at university to become an Accountant. The following topics are studied:

Bullet principles of double-entry accounting
Bullet preparation of accounting records and reports to indicate financial performance, financial position, cash flow and budgeted cash position
Bullet accounting for the GST
Bullet use of information and communication technologies relevant to the preparation of accounting records and reports — accounting packages and spreadsheets
Bullet control of the major financial elements of a business — cash, credit transactions, inventories and non-current assets
Bullet analysis and interpretation of financial reports in order to make decisions
Bullet managerial decision making including cost-volume-profit analysis
Bullet electronic business
Bullet elective topics, which may include understanding company reports, and personal financing and investing.

As stated in the QSA subject guide, the study of Accounting is of benefit to students because it:

Bullet provides a foundation in the discipline of accounting
Bullet promotes the development of numeracy, effective communication skills, and logical reasoning processes
Bullet introduces students to relevant information and communication technologies
Bullet enables students to participate more effectively and responsibly in a changing business environment

(Authority subject which counts towards an OP with a Certificate II in Business embedded)

12 BCT

BCT equips students with advanced skills which can be transferred to many types of employment ranging from office administration to running a business. Report writing skills are developed along with the ability to reason and provide logical arguments. Computer skills are integral to the study of this subject.

Students who study this subject successfully receive a Certificate I & II in Business. A level of achievement is not awarded and this subject does not count towards an OP. The table below shows the units of competency studied over a two-year period. Certificate I is completed in Year 11 and Certificate II is studied in Year 11 and completed in Year 12. Computer Technology is integrated as much as possible.

Information Processing and Technology (IPT)

IPT involves identifying problems and creating solutions to problems using computer technology. Students will learn how to program and create databases. It is an intellectual discipline that involves a study of the following:

Bullet Software and system engineering – software design and operating systems
Bullet Human–computer interaction – designing user-centred interfaces
Bullet Social and ethical issues – impact on communities worldwide
